We purchased our lavender from Barn Owl Nursery this year where we were treated to the best farm tour by owner Christine Mulder who has specialized in Lavender and Lavandins since the early 1980's. She shared with us her wealth of knowledge built from years of experience.
What is Imperial Lavender?
Imperial Lavender is a high-quality variety of lavender known for its rich, complex scent profile. Unlike standard lavender, Imperial Lavender offers a more nuanced and refined fragrance, making it a preferred choice for gourmet teas and culinary applications.
The Scent Molecules Behind the Magic
The captivating aroma of Imperial Lavender is largely attributed to its key scent molecules:
-
Linalool: This compound is responsible for the floral, slightly sweet notes of lavender. It’s known for its calming effects, making it a popular choice in aromatherapy.
-
Linalyl Acetate: Contributing a hint of fruitiness and a more rounded sweetness, linalyl acetate complements linalool, enhancing the overall fragrance and flavor profile of lavender.
-
Camphor: This molecule adds a fresh, herbaceous touch that contrasts beautifully with the sweetness of linalool and linalyl acetate, creating a well-balanced aroma.
-
Terpinen-4-ol: With its mild, spicy undertones, this molecule adds depth to the lavender's scent, ensuring it’s not overly sweet or overpowering.
Why Tanglewood's Lavender Fog Tastes So Good
In a London Fog, the blend of Earl Grey tea, steamed milk, and vanilla is elevated by the subtle, yet potent, influence of Imperial Lavender. The linalool and linalyl acetate work harmoniously with the bergamot in our version of Earl Grey, creating a smooth, comforting flavor profile. The camphor and terpinen-4-ol balance the sweetness of the vanilla, resulting in a well-rounded, delightful taste experience.
So, the next time you enjoy a Lavender Fog, remember that it’s not just the tea or the milk that makes it special. The exquisite Imperial Lavender, with its intricate scent molecules, is the true star behind the rich, comforting flavor of this beloved beverage.
